What will I learn?

Every country: where it is on the map, its flag and its capital. You also name the country from its capital.

How long does it take each day?

The Daily is 10 questions and takes about two minutes. Your lesson takes a few more. Stop whenever you like.

How long until I know them all?

At two new countries a day, you meet all 197 in about 100 days. Remembering them takes longer, and that's what the comebacks are for. See how misses come back

Can I learn faster or slower?

Yes. Settings lets you choose one, two or three new countries a day. When a lot of countries are due to come back, new ones wait until you've caught up.

When is there a new Daily?

At 4am, your time. Everyone gets the same 10 questions that day.

What happens when I get one wrong?

Nothing bad. You see the right answer, and the country comes back in your next lesson.

What if I'm stuck on a question?

Take a hint. On the Daily, a right answer with a hint scores half a point.

Can I type my answers?

Yes. You start typing flags and capitals once you know them. To type them from the start, turn it on in Settings.

What happens if I miss a day?

You keep everything you've learned. A new streak starts the next time you play. Layovers can keep a streak going, and you earn one for every 5 countries you come to know. You can hold two. If you'd rather not see streaks at all, turn them off in Settings.

Your progress

Do I need an account?

No. Open it and play. Your progress is saved on your device.

How do I move to a new phone?

Turn on sync in Settings and you get a code. Enter that code on your new phone. Keep it somewhere safe, because a lost code can't be recovered.

Can I lose my progress?

Clearing your browser's data for FarAbout removes it from that device. Sync or a backup protects you. In Settings, tap Back up now to download a file, and Restore a backup to bring it back.

The app

Is it free?

Yes. The daily ten are free to play, with no sign-up.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once it has loaded on your device. Lessons work as normal. Without a connection, your Daily may not match everyone else's that day.

Is there an app to download?

Not in the app stores yet. You can add FarAbout to your phone's home screen from your browser, and it opens like any other app.

Why 197 countries?

FarAbout teaches the 193 UN members plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan.

Will there be a paid version?

Not yet. We plan an optional Plus with extras such as new themes and a Daily archive. It will never sell skips, streak saves or progress.

What does FarAbout collect?

There are no ads and no account. Once a day the app tells our server that someone came back: a random ID and the day, with nothing that identifies you. That ID is also kept in a cookie. It also sends a few counts with no ID: how you found the app, opening the front door, starting and finishing your first Daily, starting your first lesson, and adding FarAbout to your Home Screen. You can turn all of this off in Settings. A second cookie holds the date and your ten squares, and the site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics. If you turn on sync, your progress is locked with your code before it leaves your device. If you send us a note, we get what you wrote.

Something looks wrong. How do I tell you?

In Settings, tap Send an idea or a bug.
